Being a fourth year camper at Shaffer’s High Sierra Camp I thought I had learned all there was about camp life.

CIT. It stands for Counselor in Training, but it has been so much more than that. And it isn’t over— I’ve got a whole second two-week session ahead of me.

Today I woke up at 6 with the sounds of the birds waking me up. We had some delicious fried potatoes with scramble eggs. A perfect meal for the busy day ahead to come.

Every camp session for the past four years, I have opted to become a member of the CILT Program.

Sunrise has long passed, but we stand astride our bikes at the Sunrise trailhead atop Packer Saddle in the high Sierra. 

CILT, or Camper in Leadership Training, is a program run at camp that gives a select group of older campers the chance to work in a leadership position.
