Counselor & Activity Specialists

Overview

Shaffer's High Sierra Camp offers children 8 to 17 an overnight summer camp experience with a focus on non-competitive wilderness adventure activities in California's splendid Tahoe National Forest. (Go to our Home page to read more.)

This year, we'll need about 24 counselors and activity specialists. Because our Camp is small with about 90 or fewer campers per week, our counselors double as activity specialists and activity specialists also act as counselors. Versatility is a virtue and you are likely to be asked to facilitate more than one activity area.

Openings

Hiring for male and female counselor/activity specialists for the summer begins in January.

Training

All counselors and activity specialists go through an intense, mandatory seven days of training immediately before camp begins, where we cover everything you need to know from clinics on how to conduct a particular activity to behavior management. First aid and CPR certification is not given at Camp, and you must have those certifications in hand before arriving.

Dates

Staff training begins Sunday, June 9, 2019. We then operate 9 weeks of children's camp through August 17, 2019.

Pay

Salaries for counselors and activity specialists begin at $400 per week and may be slightly higher, depending on experience and certifications. Program staff get paid for the training period.

Requirements

We're looking for men and women who have the maturity and judgment to be responsible for children and put the child's needs above their own, who are fun and have a sense of humor, who can be crazy, who can work hard but still keep a positive attitude, and who want to make a difference in a child's life.

Most program staff must have current CPR and basic first aid certifications, which they are responsible for obtaining before camp. (Even if such certifications are not required, they give you an advantage over people without such certifications.) Some positions require higher levels of first aid due to the remoteness of some activities. A lifeguard certification is a plus. Other positions may have additional requirements.
